Physiotherapy in Canada

Physiotherapy is the fifth largest regulated occupation in Canada. One-half of all physiotherapists work in or own a private practice. Other places of employment are hospitals, rehabilitation centres, sports centres, community based (patients’ homes), nursing homes, summer camps, schools, and industrial work sites. In Canada, you must register to practice as a physiotherapist with the regulatory body in the province or territory which you wish to work in.

The Canadian Alliance of Physiotherapy Regulators (The Alliance)

The Alliance is the national association of physiotherapy regulators. It is the governing body which examines our applications and ensures our education and qualifications are equivalent to those graduating from a Canadian university. On granting us the necessary credentials, the Alliance administers the Physiotherapy Competency Examination (PCE) to establish our ability to carry out a high standard of physiotherapy care in Canada. The Alliance represents 11 provincial and territorial regulators. Canada's physiotherapists are licensed/registered by provincial or territorial regulatory organisations. Each provincial and territorial regulator may have further requirements in addition to the Alliance’s assessments.Based on information the Alliance give them, the regulators decide who may or may not receive a licence to practice.
