Prince Edward Island - The Facts

  • The province of Prince Edward Island has 145,855 residents. It is located about 200 km north of Halifax, Nova Scotia and 600 km east of Quebec City. It consists of the main island and 231 minor islands

  • The principal industries of the province are agriculture, tourism and fishing.

  • Water sports are very popular on Prince Edward Island during the summer, perhaps because the Gulf of St. Lawrence and the Northumberland Strait are warmer than the Atlantic Ocean off the shores of nearby New England.

  • PEI is famous for fresh seafood. There are two lobster seasons—one in the summer and one in the fall.

  • 2014 will mark the 150th anniversary (sesquicentennial) of the 1864 Charlottetown Conference which means that more than 150 festivals, events and programs form a year-long, province-wide celebration to commemorate this landmark event.

Fun Fact:

  • Beer and soda (or pop) was not sold in cans on PEI until May 2008.
